VICTORY AT HORIZON

How's this for perseverance? Local 70 Business Agent Marty Frates has been battling with Horizon Lines for four years over work guarantee provisions in the current collective bargaining agreement. The case has been discussed, re-discussed, discussed, re-discussed, grieved and then arbitrated, and now settled. The conclusion, over $2 million and an agreement that requires Horizon –Sea Logix to purchase 23 new tractors for the Oakland terminal.

“We feel vindicated with the settlement;” reported Frates. “Monetary settlements for contact violations are usually smaller and gone in a short period of time. This settlement is substantial enough to provide for business growth and more job opportunities for our members, building toward the future.”

Frates lauded the assistance and support from Shop Stewards Jose Gonzalez, Kelsey Frazier and Larry Aiello. “Their effort and the patience of our membership were instrumental in bringing this to a successful conclusion;” said Frates.
