LOCAL 70 SAYS “NO” TO WELLS FARGO |
|
In late October, Local 70 learned that Wells Fargo Bank had made a $50,000 contribution to the “NO on Proposition 72” campaign. This proposition is the health care initiative requiring employers with 50 or more workers to give their employees basic health care coverage. Local 70's Executive Board decided that if Wells Fargo was opposed to employer-based health and welfare, Local 70 was opposed to Wells Fargo. Printed below is a letter to the bank closing a checking account the Local has had for over the last decade.
October 29, 2004 Wells Fargo Bank To Whom It May Concern: By virtue of this letter we are closing the above referenced account. We recently learned that Wells Fargo made a $50,000 contribution to the “No on Proposition 72” campaign. In our mind that is unconscionable and difficult to understand. Wells Fargo we assume provides health care for its employees. Why it would deny health care benefits to employees of other medium to large size employers is baffling, petty and narrow minded. Please issue a check in the amount of the balance of this account. Sincerely,
Chuck Mack Joseph L. Silva, Jr. Secretary-Treasurer President CM:JLSjr:rs Opeiu29/afl-clio
